ARSENAL’s transfer committee have been likened to ‘blindfolded BDO darts players aiming at a spinning board’ in a Paddy Power video which has gone viral.
The Gunners ended up as the Premier League’s biggest spenders this summer with Martin Odegaard, Ben White, Aaron Ramsdale, Nuno Tavares, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Takehiro Tomayasu all joining the club.
But Mikel Arteta’s troops have flopped, starting the season with three successive Premier League losses leaving them rooted to the bottom of the table.
The transfer shambles has led to a barrage of criticism aimed at technical director Edu – and for Arsenal to become figures of fun for mischievous bookmaker Paddy Power.
In a video entitled ‘Reverse Moneyball’, which has now been watched more than 1million times on Twitter and Facebook, the Irish bookie claim to have gone ‘behind the scenes with Arsenal’s transfer committee’ – except unsurprisingly it’s a spoof.
In it, a new Arsenal scout is introduced to fans, revealing he’s ‘been scouting all over Europe, has worked at a load of top clubs and is here to help the club find the next Patrick Vieira’.
But he is immediately cut down to size with the head of the transfer committee laughing the recruit off – defiantly telling him: “That’s not what we do.”
The new scout then gets the wrong end of the stick entirely, believing the club are well-stocked in midfield and are instead after ‘the next Thierry Henry’ – a striker.
But the head of the committee cuts his man down to size again, informing him: “In this league there are rich teams, there are poor teams, and there are banter teams.”
His colleague on the committee then adds: “Towards the end of the Wenger years, we decided the league title was out of reach so instead of making good decisions in the transfer market, we said we’d have a bit of a laugh instead.”
The faces of Kim Kallstrom, Mikael Silvestre, Andre Santos, Shkodran Mustafi, Mohamed Elneny and Yaya Sanogo, the latter who was ‘signed when he was p**sed’, are then all reeled off as examples of a policy which sees the scouts behave ‘like blindfolded BDO darts players aiming at a spinning board’.
The reverse moneyball video, which sees Paddy Power social media stars Steven Quick and Mark Walsh play the roles of actors, has been liked and shared thousands of times as fans rush to pay tribute to the work.
One frustrated supporter tagged Arsenal in his response after watching and asked: “Is this how you go about your business when it comes to buying/selling players @Arsenal? Because it sure seems that way. But really we are becoming a joke of a club in the way we do our business.”
Another passionate Gunners fan responded: “This is blatantly what happens and they should show this to the Kroenkes.”
“Genuinely is what it must be like,” wrote another, while one fan added: “Paddy Power content is on FIRE, they are nailing it AGAIN!”
Arsenal have the chance to end their losing run when they take on Norwich at the Emirates on Saturday.
