A UK teenager was sentenced to two years in detention after he killed an elderly man with a single punch, surveillance footage shows.
Omar Moumeche was 16 when he punched Dennis Clarke, 82, at a Derby bus station — located roughly 80 miles outside of Manchester — in May 2021.
Clarke suffered a fractured skull and a brain bleed, causing him to die in the hospital nine days later.
The now-18-year-old was sentenced to two years in youth detention Friday after being convicted of manslaughter in July.
While at Derby’s Eagle Market, Clarke stopped to talk to a group of teens who were playing around on top of the escalator, blocking it, surveillance footage released by Derbyshire Constabulary shows.
The Army veteran — who served in Singapore — then leaves the supermarket and heads toward the bus station around 4:30 p.m., but the group of three teens follow him.
The teens were seen surrounding him, and Moumeche pushed the elderly man. Clarke then pushed him back.
Seconds later, Clarke was seen falling to the ground, striking his head and falling unconscious, police said.
Moumeche fled the station and was arrested a short time later.
During a one-week trial, Moumeche’s defense claimed the teen “acted in self-defense.”
The two other boys weren’t charged, according to Derbyshire Constabulary.
Clarke’s family said they have “been left with a feeling of emptiness” after his death, according to The Mirror.
Clarke’s nephew, Ricky Davey, revealed in a victim impact statement that the veteran served in the Sherwood Foresters regiment and was a fisherman in his free time.
He also loved to dance and “doted on his family,” was a devout Christian and was part of the church choir.
“It’s going to take many years to come to terms with the devastating death,” Davey said.
“His death has left a hole in the lives of the whole family and we have just been left with a feeling of emptiness.”
