Israel-Hamas war LIVE: IDF publishes shocking drone footage of ’55-metre-long Hamas tunnel’ under Gaza’s al-Shifa hospital

The 31 babies evacuated from al-Shifa hospital are at risk of suffering from serious infections, the Wrold Health Organisation regional emergency director told Sky news.

Richard Brennan this evening just hours after the infants were evacuated: ‘They are by no means out of the woods. Many of them are very very sick. 11 of them are classified as critical. They all have serious infections.

‘Many of them are very low weight. So they have a tough road ahead of them.’

‘One of the more tragic parts of this story is we don’t know where any of the parents are,’ he added.

Thomas Hand was spotted talking on stage at a protest against antisemitism in London this evening to call for the release of the hostages, including his daughter Emily Hand.

He was seen speaking to the crowd with a microphone in front of a large Jewish flag – while hundreds gathered with banners and photos of those currently held captive.

The IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari is speaking at a news conference.

He said Hamas has been carrying out war crimes in hospitals as Israeli soldiers continue its operation at al Shifa hospital – Gaza’s largest medical complex.

Gaza’s Hamas government said Sunday the death toll from fighting between Israeli troops and Hamas militants in the Palestinian territory had reached 13,000 since war began on October 7.

The Hamas government said more than 5,500 children were among the dead, alongside 3,500 women, with 30,000 more people wounded.

Its health ministry has previously said it can no longer give exact tolls as intense fighting has prevented bodies from being recovered.

The IDF has released footage of what is claims shows a Hamas tunnel below al Shifa hospital in Gaza.

It said the tunnel was 10 metres underneath the hospital complex and was 55 metres long.

In an update published on X, the military said: ‘IDF and ISA forces revealed a significant 55-meter-long terrorist tunnel, 10 meters underneath the Shifa Hospital complex during an intelligence-based operation.

‘The tunnel entrance contains various defense mechanisms, such as a blast-proof door and a firing hole, in an attempt by Hamas to block Israeli forces from entering.’

The statement did not say what was beyond the door. The tunnel had been accessed through a shaft discovered in a shed within the Shifa compound that contained munitions, it said.

Hamas has acknowledged that it has a network of hundreds of kilometres of secret tunnels, bunkers and access shafts throughout Gaza but has consistently denied that any exist underneath civilian infrastructure, such as hospitals.

• A senior advisor to Israel’s prime minister says the IDF has found a command room under the al-Shifa hospital complex.
• Mark Regev told the BBC: ‘We found a command and control room on the minus 2 floor (of the hospital) but once again we have to show – and we still will, it’s just a matter of time – the connection between the tunnel network and the hospital.’
• The advisor said the IDF would have conclusive evidence of the control room in the next few days.
• He added that there are fears that booby traps may have been laid by fleeing Hamas fighters for IDF troops.

• Many of the 31 babies evacuated from the al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City have ‘lost their parents in bombardments’ by Israel, the Palestinian Red Crescent has said.
• The 31 newborns were taken to the Emirati Hospital in Rafah today, PRCS spokesperson Nebal Farsakh told the BBC.
• Parents who survived had been ordered to leave Gaza City before their babies’ evacuation, and their whereabouts are now unknown, she said.

• United Nations secretary-general Antonio Guterres says he is ‘deeply shocked’ that two UN schools were attacked in less than 24 hours in Gaza.
• ‘Dozens of people – many women and children – were killed and injured as they were seeking safety in United Nations premises,’ Guterres said in a statement.
• ‘Hundreds of thousands of Palestinian civilians are seeking shelter at United Nations facilities throughout Gaza due to the intensified fighting. I reaffirm that our premises are inviolable.’
• Guterres called the number of civilian casualties in the bloody war ‘staggering and unacceptable’.

• Hamas has shared what appears to be footage of blasts at the Al-Rantisi children’s hospital in Gaza City.
• A Palestinian telegram channel shared the footage saying it showed a ‘raid on Al-Rantisi Hospital by three martyrdom fighters after spotting occupation soldiers positioned inside.’

• Israel’s Channel 12 news programme has broadcast claims from female soldiers that they were threatened with court martial for raising concerns before the October 7 attack.

• US Deputy National Security Adviser Jon Finer told NBC that ‘gaps have narrowed’ in talks to free Israeli hostages in Gaza and ‘we are closer than we have been’ to a deal.
• Negotiations to free the hostages are at a ‘very sensitive stage’ and ‘there has been significant progress, including in recent days, in recent hours,’ he said.
• But, he warned it would be ‘premature’ to say the deal was inevitable, ‘given how close we have come in the past.’

• The United Nations operation in Gaza (UNWRA) says that two of its schools, which are being used to shelter displaced families, were hit in less than 24 hours.

The agency’s chief, Phillipe Lazzarini, said in a statement:

Since the war began, at least 176 people sheltering in UNRWA schools were reported killed and nearly 800 were reported injured during Israeli Forces’ bombardment. UNRWA is unable to confirm the casualty figures and is verifying. UNRWA confirms that at least 17 of its facilities were directly hit.

Most of the facilities hit had families in them including older people, parents, and children. They were all clearly marked as UN buildings carrying a blue flag. UNRWA shares the coordinates of these buildings on a regular basis with parties to the conflict.

This vicious war is reaching a point of no return when all rules are disrespected, in overt disregard for civilian lives.

• Israel is hopeful a significant number of hostages could be released by Hamas ‘in coming days,’ its ambassador to the US, Michael Herzog, has told ABC.
• He said: ‘The less we’re going into the details, the better the chances of such a deal, but they are very serious efforts and I’m hopeful that we can have the deal in the coming days.’
• His comments come after Qatar’s prime minister said only ‘very minor’ details need to be ironed out in a potential deal between Israel and Hamas.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has released a statement regarding the cargo ship hijacked by Houthi rebels:

We strongly condemn the Iranian attack against an international ship. The ship, owned by a British company and operated by a Japanese company, was hijacked on Iranian whim by the Houthi militia in Yemen.

On board the ship are 25 crew members of different nationalities, including: Ukrainians, Bulgarians, Filipinos and Mexicans. No Israelis were present on the ship.

This is another act of Iranian terrorism which expresses a leap forward in Iran’s aggression against the citizens of the free world, and creates international implications regarding the security of global shipping lanes.

• Yemen’s Houthi rebels, a militia backed by Iran, have seized a cargo ship after vowing to target Israeli vessels.
• Up to 52 people are thought to have been on board the Galaxy Leader vehicle carrier when it was seized.
• The ship is said to be Israeli-owned, but the IDF has denied that it is an Israeli ship in a statement.

• Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has said ‘the defeat of the Zionist regime (Israel) in Gaza is a fact.’
• In a speech in Tehran, Khamenei said: ‘Advancing and entering hospitals or people’s homes is not a victory, because victory means defeating the other side.
• Khamenei charged that Israel ‘has so far failed’ in achieving its declared goal of destroying Hamas ‘despite the massive bombings’ of Gaza.
• ‘This incapacity reflects the inability of the United States and Western countries’ which back Israel, he added.
• Khamenei said Israel has ‘killed thousands of children without any remorse’ because, as he claimed, ‘Zionists consider themselves to be a superior race’.
• During his visit, the Revolutionary Guard’s aerospace force unveiled new defence systems and drones, state media said, and Khamenei inspected a drone which carried the name ‘Gaza’.
• Khamenei urged Muslim countries which have formal relations with Israel to ‘cut off’ these ties and halt trade.
• ‘Some Islamic governments… have not yet condemned (Israel’s actions in Gaza), but this is not acceptable,’ he said.

The Director-General of the World Health Organisation, Tedros Ghebreyesus, has confirmed the evacuation of sick children from a Gaza hospital. He confirmed:

• The WHO has led a second UN and Palestine Red Crescent Society mission to Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza #Gaza today, under extremely intense and high-risk security conditions.
• 31 very sick babies were evacuated, along with 6 health workers and 10 staff family members.
• 6 Palestine Red Crescent ambulances were used for the transfer. The babies were taken to Al-Helal Al-Emairati Maternity Hospital, where they are receiving urgent care in the neonatal intensive care unit.
• Further missions are being planned to urgently transport remaining patients and health staff out of Al-Shifa Hospital, pending guarantees of safe passage by parties to the conflict.

• Since the October 7 attacks Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari has apeared on Israeli television every evening to update the public on the battle with Hamas.
• In doing so he has become the face and the voice of the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), and a reassuring presence for those fearful for their loved ones.
• Standing in the limelight is something of a contrast for a man who three years ago was leading the shadowy Shayetet 13 naval special forces, renowned for counter-terrorism and sabotage.
• Hagari’s evening briefings often include an arsenal of maps, satellite images, audio clips and videos: presenting the case for a ground war in the Gaza Strip to secure Israel’s future.
• Hagari’s PR offensive has earned him high public trust ratings domestically, according to a poll by Israel’s Bar-Ilan University.
• Some 74 percent of people questioned said the army spokesman was the most reliable source of information on the war – compared to less than four percent for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Worried soldiers who raised concerns about suspicious activity in the days leading to Hamas terror raids on Israel were threatened with court martial, it has emerged.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his cabinet have faced stiff criticism from Israelis who have accused them of being caught out by the raids which left more than 1,200 dead.

A further 239 people were taken hostage and although a handful have been released there are dozens of worried families still waiting for news on loved ones.

Now Israel’s leading Channel 12 news programme has broadcast claims from female soldiers they were threatened with court martial for raising concerns before the October 7 attack.

One said: ‘We were told that if we continue to harass on this issue, you will stand trial.’

• European Union Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has condemned ‘the unacceptable violence by extremists in the West Bank’.
• In a post on X, she repeated EU backing for a two-state solution to the Middle East conflict.
• Following a meeting with Jordan’s King Abdullah, the President said the EU would continue to cooperate to get much needed humanitarian aid into Gaza.

• Israel’s Defence Forces carried out two major raids in refugee camps in the occupied West Bank.
• The IDF said operations in the Jenin and Balata camps saw 38 wanted Palestinians arrested.
• Clashes also took place between Israeli troops and Palestinian protesters in the village of Tamum and the Dheisheh refugee camp near Bethlehem, the Times of Israel reports.
• One Palestinian was killed in Jenin, and a second in Dheisheh, according to Palestinian media.

Reports have been swirling that Israel and Hamas are nearing an agreement on the release of hostages held in the Gaza Strip.

The deal is being brokered by Qatar, with officials there suggesting it could be nearing completion pending ‘minor details’. Israel and its backer the US however have denied any such deal.

Here is what has been said so far:

Qatar: Prime Minister Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman al-Thani said today: ‘The challenges that remain in the negotiations are very minor compared to the bigger challenges, they are more logistical, they are more practical.’ He added that he was ‘more confident that we are close enough to reach a deal.’

US: White House National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said on X: ‘We have not reached a deal yet, but we continue to work hard to get to a deal.’

Israel: Last night, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denied what he called ‘incorrect reports’ that an agreement was imminent. ‘As of now there is no deal,’ he said.

• Some 10,000 people fled from the north of the Gaza Strip towards the south yesterday, according to the United Nations.
• That figure is based on estimates by UN observers on the ground, its Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said.
• It noted that among those fleeing were unaccompanied minors.

The Palestinian Red Crescent said in a statement on X (translated):

Today, Palestinian Red Crescent ambulance crews, in coordination with the World Health Organization and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), were able to evacuate 31 premature babies from Al-Shifa Hospital. They were transported by Red Crescent ambulances to the south, in preparation for their transfer to the Emirates Hospital in Rafah.

• Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei urged Muslim states to ‘at least cut off political ties with Israel for a limited period of time’, the Tasnim news agency reports.
• It comes weeks after he called for an Islamic oil and food embargo on Israel.
• At a November 11 conference, Muslim states did not agree to impose wide-ranging sanctions on Israel as requested by Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi.

• The IDF says a paratrooper brigade, supported by tanks and the air forces, are attacking the Sheikh Ejalin and Rimal neighborhoods in Gaza.
• ‘As part of the fighting, the fighters located about 35 tunnel shafts, many weapons and eliminated terrorists,’ the Israeli military said on X.
• Troops raided the homes of senior Hamas officials in the upmarket Rimal area, the IDF said, much of which has been destroyed by Israeli airstrikes.

• A spokesperson for the Hamas-run health ministry has claimed that 30 premature babies, reportedly evacuated from al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City are being taken to medical facilities in Egypt.

• Qatar’s leader has said only ‘very minor’ details remain on a deal between Israel and Hamas to secure the release of some of some 238 Israeli hostages held in Gaza.
• ‘The challenges facing the agreement are just practical and logistical,’ he said during a press conference with EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell.
• The plan is likely to involve the release of hostages in return for the release of Palestinian women and children held in Israel, it has been suggested.

• Gaza’s Hamas-run Gaza health ministry claims that 30 premature babies were evacuated by a United Nations team from al-Shifa hospital.
• Earlier this morning, a World Health Organisation report indicated that 32 babies were left behind in a ‘critical’ condition after a mass evacuation from the hospital.

On 18 November 2023, an MSF staff’s relative died and another one was injured in an attack on an MSF convoy trying to evacuate 137 people – MSF Palestinian staff members and their families. They were trapped for a week in MSF premises located near Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza. MSF condemns in the strongest terms this deliberate attack.

• A World Health Organization (WHO) team is heading to al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City to evacuate the babies, according to the Hamas-appointed director of hospitals in the enclave.
• An Associated Press reporter said they saw a convoy of ambulances, escorted by United Nations vehicles, heading north toward Gaza City.
• WHO has said it hopes to evacuate patients to southern Gaza.
• The IDF, which has taken control of the hospital, as said it is working to evacuate as many patients as possible from the compound, which it claims has been used as a Hamas command centre.

Following the alert in the north of the country a short time ago, the air defense fighters successfully intercepted a suspicious aerial target that crossed from Lebanon.

• Yemen’s Houthi militia say they will target all ships owned and operated by Israeli companies or those carrying the Israeli flag, Reuters reports citing the group’s Telegram channel account.

• The IDF says its warplanes destroyed Hamas infrastructure in the neighborhoods of Jabalia, Zeytun and Beit Lahia in northern Gaza.
• Troops of the Nahal Brigade fought on the outskirts of the Jabalia refugee camp, where the IDF said the encountered and eliminated Hamas fighters with the help of tanks and air support.

• Israel and Hamas have not yet reached a deal on a temporary ceasefire, a White House spokesperson said last night. The U.S. is continuing to work to get a deal between the two sides.
• World Health Organization (WHO) officials described al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City as a ‘death zone’ after a visit to the complex. They said they observed a mass grave at the site which they were told contained the remains of 80 people.
• A large number of people left al-Shifa hospital amid conflicting reports over whether an evacuation was ordered by the Israeli military, which the IDF categorically denied.
• Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ruled out a full ceasefire with Hamas and said he will only consider only a temporary pause in exchange for the return of hostages.
• The Hamas-run health ministry inside Gaza said yesterday that the official death toll is 12,300 people, including 5,000 children.
• Thousands of Israelis completed a five-day march on Jerusalem to demand a meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss plans to save hostages captured by Hamas in the October 7 attacks.
