Ratcliffe will oversee all things football-related and has already appointed ex-Man City chief Omar Berrada as his new CEO.

But Sir Jim is also set to explore the world of AI in the hopes it can give United players a cutting edge on the field.

The Mail claims United have forged a link with the Institute of Sport at Manchester Metropolitan University.

It means United now have access to in-depth research and studies about a range of PdD programmes.

And one of those includes the use of AI for analysis and metrics.

United agreed the deal before Ratcliffe’s takeover last year and hope it can revolutionise the way their analysts process data related to live games.

That could in turn help manager Erik ten Hag make informed decisions to help sway the outcome of matches.

AI could help track players’ physical wellbeing, including warning signs of an impending injury.

And it may also flag clever ways of exploiting an opponent’s weakness.

United are trialling their new techniques in training sessions at Carrington, with drones filming the base from overhead.

United’s football director John Murtough said: “Working with the Institute of Sport will build on our excellent existing research and innovation teams in order to further enhance the performance and development support that we are able to provide for our players.”

Institute of Sport director Professor Tim Cable added: “Our collaboration with Manchester United has enabled us to attract world-leading talent into Manchester and bring our state-of-the-art scientific research to address the performance needs of the club.

“The initiative will provide the club with an added layer of intelligence, further strengthening Manchester United’s football operations.”
