David Beckham’s Disney+ docuseries Save Our Squad ‘fails to get renewed for second season after low ratings’

David Beckham‘s Disney+ docuseries will reportedly not be getting a second series, after struggling to bring in high ratings.

Save Our Squad saw the former footballer, 48, return to east London pitches where he played as a child to mentor an under-14 team struggling to survive in their league.

Westward Boys had failed to win a game all season before David arrived, where he worked to save them from relegation.

The heart-warming documentary delved into the former England captain and the group of youngsters as they worked hard to achieve their dreams, and aired in November 2022.

However, The Mirror reports that Disney producers have now decided not to continue with the show after less than stellar ratings.

A source told the publication: ‘The bosses at Disney were thrilled to sign David for Save Our Squad. They felt it was a real coup.

‘While the documentary was only commissioned for one series, they hoped to continue it, and film more as new kids came through the squad.

‘They wanted to replicate the success of Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams for the BBC. But unfortunately, they didn’t get the ratings so they decided to stop after the one series.’

Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams aired the same year, and followed a very similar premise, with the cricket star going to his hometown of Preston to create his own team.

In a bid to prove the sport was not just for posh people he formed a team of youngsters who competed against a private school as well as veterans.

The show captured the hearts of the public, as it explored the stories of the reluctant teenagers and garnered over 3.3 million viewers in the first 30 days.

Unlike David’s show, Field of Dreams was commissioned for a second series, but was put on pause after Freddie, 46, was injured in a horrific car crash in December 2022, while filming Top Gear.

The former international cricketer was airlifted to hospital after he flipped a three-wheel open-top Morgan Super 3 at Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey, and has been recovering after suffering serious injuries in the crash.

Meanwhile, despite David’s first docuseries not finding success, his Netflix show with wife Victoria broke records.

The tell-all Beckham four-part series, released in October, saw the Beckhams’ give an intimate insight into their marriage and early romance, their family life, as well as charting David’s footballing career.

According to the Broadcasters Audience Research Board (BARB), the first episode saw 3,813,100 fans tune in.

The second instalment was also a success reaching 2,868,800 viewers by the week ending October 8.

The series, titled Beckham, followed Posh and Becks in their personal and professional lives, going through their history together with interviews of the couple.

The footballer told of his struggles with his mental health after becoming public enemy No 1 following his infamous red card upset during the 1998 World Cup, with abuse being levelled at him and his family including angry fans throwing their TVs out of windows and an effigy of him being hung outside a pub.

His wife Victoria also joined him in speaking for the first time about the pain suffered in the aftermath of claims about his alleged affair with Rebecca Loos, with the former Spice Girl breaking down in tears as she confides it was the ‘hardest’ time of her life.
