I dumped my girlfriend when she asked for time to think about my proposal – people say my justification is ‘insane’

A HEARTBROKEN man revealed that he broke up with his girlfriend after she hesitated on his proposal.

Instead of getting hitched, she got ditched after she asked for time to think about marriage.

The Redditor Sadanddevastated explained that he made the decision to break things off after consulting his family.

The 27-year-old had been in a long-term relationship for four years when he decided to pop the question.

“We really loved each other, my family loved her, her family loved me. We had discussions of marriage, we made plans for the future, how many kids we wanted,” he explained.

“My girlfriend was always extremely excited about it.”

Over months of planning, he dropped multiple hints of his proposal plans and even booked a resort for the special day.

When the moment arrived, however, he was shocked when his girlfriend requested months to think about it.

“That just completely stunned me and was one of the most heartbreaking moments of my life,” he explained.

“My girlfriend kept apologizing, saying she just needed to be in the right mental space, and that right then, she wasn’t. 

“She cried and promised me that we were technically engaged, she just needed a few more months to officially accept the proposal. I felt empty, sad, embarrassed.”

Feeling embarrassed, he decided to turn to his siblings for advice.

His brother thought that his girlfriend simply had a case of cold feet and advised him to give her the space she requested.

His sister, on the other hand, thought her reaction was a huge red flag.

“My sister told me what my girlfriend did was girl code for cheating and that my girlfriend was probably ashamed about accepting about my proposal, given that she most likely was having an affair,” he revealed.

“My sister told me that my girlfriend would probably call off the affair in the next couple of months, after which she would be comfortable accepting the proposal.”

She was shocked and talking a lot, asking why, but at this point, I just didn’t trust her anymore.

He decided to listen to his sister, finding his brother’s advice “naive.”

After his girlfriend arrived home from work one day, he broke things off.

“I told her we were done and that she had a couple of hours to pack up and leave. I gave her no heads up about it. I gave no reasons,” he said.

“She was shocked and talking a lot, asking why, but at this point, I just didn’t trust her anymore.

After she left, he even blocked her number to avoid getting her texts.

“What other choice did I have but to kick her out? She ripped my soul out and I still did not hate her,” he said.

“How did it matter to me whether she was homeless or not? I really did not care what she did with her life anymore, I just did not want to be in the same room as her anymore.”

People were shocked by his snap decision, with some in disbelief that he chose to believe his sister immediately.

Some hypothesized that his sister had a grudge against his girlfriend.

“Does your sister not like this girl or something cause that isn’t girl code I ever heard of before,” said one.

“It does sound like maybe she is thinking twice about things and I can see how that would be upsetting but you and your sister really jumped on that conclusion and you made a huge decision over something you just think happened.”

Others thought he was overall valid for breaking up with her but found his reasoning inane.

“You can break up for whatever reason you want. Her rejecting your proposal is a valid one if that’s what you want,” said one commenter.

“At the same time. You assuming she’s cheating off that is absurd. And I would have personally given her a little while to consider.”
