I’m a cleaning pro – six things you should scrub without fail every week & you’re definitely forgetting 2 of them

IT can be time-consuming keeping on top of keeping a house clean each week, but there are six things you should never skip, according to a professional.

Ida, who creates home and cleaning videos revealed her top household items that she always scrubs each week.

On her @siivousfriikki account, she wrote: “6 things you should clean weekly 🫧 Did any of these surprise you?”

First up, and this wasn’t too unusual, was the toilet, and she showed adding bleach and scrubbing it with a brush.

Next, she always makes sure her towels are cleaned on a weekly basis.

The third thing on her must-do list was bedding.

More on cleaning

Each week she strips the duvet, pillows and sheets and puts them in her washing machine.

The fourth item were her make-up brushes and sponges, and this is because they are absorbent and soak up water, dirt, bacteria, oil, and dead skin

To achieve this, she rubbed the brushes on a bar of soap and washed them thoroughly, before laying them out to dry on a towel.

Next up were bathroom surfaces and her sink, and she demonstrated cleaning them with a sponge until they were gleaming.

She also used disinfectant wipes for her switches and door handles.

Finally she washes all her cleaning cloths and chucks them in her machine.

Her list may come as a surprise to some people.

A recent UK survey found nearly one in 10 people wash their towels just twice a year, and men are five times more likely to clean their towel just once a year.

Meanwhile, another poll found 45 per cent of single men admitted only washing their sheets every three to four months.

And a study by Cosmetify found  as many as one in four British women (26 per cent) have never actually washed their makeup brushes.

Ida’s video has racked up 31,000 likes, and people were quick to comment.

One said: “These things can only been done IF you don’t work full time honestly. as a full time studying working 30 hours a week, it’s almost impossible to keep up.”

Another added: “I do it every 2 days.”

Dirtiest Items In Your Home You’re Probably Forgetting To Clean

Research shows people are exposed to an average of 60,000 types of germs on a daily basis.

Cleaning expert and Product Development Scientist at Astonish, Olivia Young, reveals the dirtiest items in your home and how to clean them.

Kitchen sponges or cloths

Some of the items we use to clean surfaces are actually the dirtiest. From wiping down worktops, to cleaning dishes, kitchen sponges or clothes are used multiple times throughout the day. And when doing so, it’s usually wet and warm, meaning if it’s not cleaned properly, it can be a prime spot for bacteria to grow.

As a general rule of thumb, if you’ve used your sponge for around two weeks – it’s time to replace it.

Shoes

Shoes are without a doubt an item in your home that is full of bacteria. A study suggested a single shoe sole has an average of 421,000 units of bacteria, but there’s no need to panic.

Most of these germs that gather on shoes won’t come into contact with other areas of your house, assuming that you take them off as you enter or put them in a box in your wardrobe.

Pet bowls and toys

Pet bowls have actually been found to be the third most contaminated item in households, meaning they are a breeding ground for germs and bacteria that could make you and your pet unwell.

Give them a wash with warm soapy water after each use to keep bacteria at bay. For toys, if they’re plastic you can soak them in warm water with either disinfectant or soap, soft toys can be cleaned thoroughly in a washing machine on a gentle cycle.

Toothbrush holder

Your toothbrush holder is probably not something you’ve considered to be dirty – but there’s more germs in the container that holds your toothbrush, than the taps on your sink.

Clean your toothbrush holder at least once or twice a week.
