My neighbours’ new hot tub is driving me insane but they say my kids are just as noisy – people are so torn by it all

A WOMAN has vented her frustration after her neighbour set up a new noisy inflatable hot tub in their garden.

The “upset” social forum user explained how her family-of-four live in a family neighbourhood and admitted that they do make some noise but just “usual family stuff.”

In the post shared to Mumsnet, she went on to say how this includes the occasional music practice and singing, but notes that they most shut windows.

She adds that when their children play in the garden, it’s never late, nor do they do it “excessively.”

Giving a summary of the problem, the woman continued: “Basically, we’re really sensitive to our neighbour’s noise dislikes as they live alone and have said they don’t like the sound of children.

“However, they have recently acquired a hot tub and it is driving me insane.

“We don’t have big gardens. Ours is around 7m across and theirs 3.5m across.”

Neighbour has said it’s just like a fridge and that we should get used to it as they’ve had to get used to our children

She went on to say how the hot tub is on “24/7 with a hum that’s impossible to tune out” and notes how they can also hear it from the bathroom, kitchen and two back bedrooms if the windows are open.

Despite telling the neighbour how she felt and them building a soundproof box to encase the pump, she says it’s barely made any difference to the sound.

However, she noted: “Neighbour has said it’s just like a fridge and that we should get used to it as they’ve had to get used to our children.

I caught my nuisance neighbour swiping my pricey garden gravel every day for WEEKS – but I got my own revenge

“Literally, as in you have laughing, babbling, crying children, I have a hot tub, c’est la vie. Which has made me feel really sad because comparing children to a hot tub is just mean?!”

She went on to say that they haven’t asked for the tub to be removed, just to be able to aid in building an improved sound dampener, with an expert if necessary.

“We are being friendly but honest in sharing how we feel because it’s literally ruining our outside space,” the woman pointed out.

“It’s much louder than a fridge…more like a substation. Our youngest says ‘zzzzzz’, making the sound of it when we go outdoors.”

She concluded: “We don’t want to fall out with neighbour any more than this and moving from this otherwise lovely neighbourhood seems rash and expensive.”

The baffled woman asked other social forum users what they’d do in her situation – and people had very mixed responses.

Many people argued that she was in fact the one in the wrong and urged her just to “suck it up.”

“You can’t change it so the quicker you accept it the better really,” wrote one.

“You will stop noticing it soon – it’s only obvious because it’s new and now you’re stressed about it so all feels exaggerated.”

A second commented: “Suck it up. They’ll get bored eventually, or panic when they get their first electricity bill. Either way, I don’t see this as a permanent problem.”

“They are correct though – the noise of their hot tub is annoying to you, your kids are annoying to them, it’s life when you live close to people,” a third added.

How high can a garden fence be?

Despite what many people think a garden fence can be as high as 100m but you need to get planning permission for any fence taller than 2m.

Any fence under 2m does not need planning permission.

However, there are some complications to this.

If you are thinking about front garden fences, restrictions state that fences alongside a driveway can be a maximum of 1m or 3ft.

You would need to get planning permission for putting a trellis on a fence of 2m.

But, if any plant that you grow on that trellis exceeds 2m, you do not need to obtain a permit for the growing plant.

Meanwhile, a fourth chimed in: “You’re annoying them with your noise and now they’re annoying you back, unless you live in the middle of nowhere then there’s nothing you can really do.”

Another agreed: “I hate hot tubs, but as a family with just your “usual” noise you’ll still be making more noise that them.

“So suck it up. You can’t hold neighbours to standards that you don’t maintain yourself,”

Elsewhere, others suggested ways for the woman to get her own back.

“I’d play music outside all the time. Or talk radio. Or both. All. The. Time,” one person noted.

“And if they complained I’d just shrug and say it’s the only way I can cope with your hot tub noise.”

Another joked she should get a trampoline for you all the family to use have “noisy fun on.”

“Neighbours will get used to it,” they added.
