Jimmy Kimmel criticized Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene on Live for claiming President Joe Biden tried to assassinate Donald Trump, a claim that quickly spread on right-wing news outlets.
“This would actually be funny, if it wasn’t so stupid and dangerous,” Kimmel said during his opening monologue Wednesday evening (May 22).
He shared a screenshot of Greene’s post on X, which claimed that Biden tried to have Trump killed in 2022 when the FBI raided his Mar-a-Lago home to uncover classified documents.
“The Biden DOJ and FBI were planning to assassinate Pres Trump and gave the green light,” she posted on X. “Does everyone get it yet???!!!! What are Republicans going to do about it?”
What she is likely referring to is the recent news that a court filing in one of Trump’s four criminal cases was unsealed Tuesday, revealing an “operations order” from the raid that stated, “Law enforcement officers of the Department of Justice may use deadly force when necessary,” per Newsweek.
Kimmel hit back at the right-wing outlets that ran with the claim. “We will pray that you are someday able to experience an emotion called shame,” he said.
He also debunked the theory, pointing out that POTUS and the FBI certainly have the ability to find Trump if they really wanted to.
“The diabolical mastermind, Joe Biden, sent an elite team of ultra-liberal FBI agents to assassinate Donald Trump, but somehow he slipped out the back door,” he said. “Somehow they missed the fact that the loudest and most famous man in America, and all 15 of his Secret Service agents, were in New Jersey at the time that they raided Mar-a-Lago.”
Kimmel regularly takes shots at Greene and Trump during his opening monologues on Live, and Wednesday’s broadcast was no different.
“What a rich imagination this woman has. You’d almost think she has the brain of a child, you know?” he said of Greene.
He also teased Trump for being “dramatic.”
“The temperature in the courtroom is a ‘freezing icebox,’ recovering stolen documents is ‘an assassination attempt,’ but this?” he said as he showed clips of Trump supporters storming the Capitol during the Jan. 6, 2021 riot. “That’s just tourism.”
