Irish rap group revitalizes their mother tongue in ‘Kneecap’ trailer

Kneecap, the Belfast hip-hop group, brings the Irish language to the big screen in their film of the same name. The trio, Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap, and DJ Próvaí, play themselves alongside Michael Fassbender.

The mostly true account of the band’s origins chronicles Kneecap’s rowdy journey to making Irish language music and the radical potential of speaking their native language. Switching between English and Irish, the trailer promises raucous shenanigans, conflict with the police, and a humorous unraveling of the status quo. It even includes a lyrical Easter egg for the real Kneecap heads.

The film is writer Rich Peppiatt’s directorial debut, and it won the the NEXT award out of Sundance 2024.

Kneecap hits theaters Aug. 2.
