‘The Bear’ Star Ayo Edebiri Spills About “Shocking” Role on ‘Kelly and Ryan’: “How Can I Make Everybody Hate Me?”

The Bear star Ayo Edebiri stopped by Live with Kelly and Ryan this morning (Aug. 15) to talk about her role on the show, and how “shocking” it was getting into character. The breakout actress, who previously starred as Hattie in Dickinson and was the voice to Missy in Big Mouth, plays driven sous-chef Sydney in the new Hulu hit show.

During the segment, co-hosts Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest couldn’t stop raving about The Bear, with Seacrest telling Edebiri, “You come in and run the show” and Ripa calling her a “young protege.”

Edebiri describes her character as driven adding that, “She’s a notebook girl. She’s a girl with a notebook.” However, the actress admitted that the road to becoming Sydney caused her to step out of her comfort zone.

“It was very funny filming because I’m a comedian and a writer and I feel like whenever I step into a room or a space I’m like, ‘Okay how can I make you like me?’ she said. “And it was very, kind of, shocking, playing this character.”

She continued, “And we’re doing these scenes and I’m like, ‘Okay how can I make everybody hate me, I guess?’”

The Bear follows fine-dining chef, Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, played by Shameless star Jeremy Allen White, as he moves back to Chicago to run his family’s sandwich shop after a death in the family. The show explores the trials and tribulations as he attempts to run a small business and keep up with a difficult staff.

Having been released in June, the eight-episode series is currently streaming exclusively on Hulu, and FX has already renewed the show for a second season, which is slated to premiere in 2023.

Live with Kelly and Ryan airs weekdays at 9 a.m. ET on ABC.
