THE surging crime figures represent a scandalous failure by police and the Government.
A 37 per cent rise in shoplifting in one year is truly appalling and shocking.
But if thefts worth under £200 are treated, at worst, with a fine in the post, what do we expect? Of course serial shoplifters and organised criminal gangs will take those odds.
Home Secretary James Cleverly has ordered police to attend every shop theft. Will they? Or will they just ignore orders from ministers in Westminster, as seems now to be routine?
It’s not just shoplifting. Other thefts are soaring, as are robberies and gun and knife crime.
Parts of Britain are in danger of becoming lawless no-go zones for businesses and citizens, like certain increasingly dystopian US cities.

What are our cops doing, aside from collaring Twitter trolls and flaunting their liberal values at every possible opportunity?
Wrong route
NO ONE in their right mind would defend our railways over recent years.
Endless cancellations. Routinely late and jam-packed trains. An absurdly complex and confusing ticketing structure. And all of it at rip-off prices.
No wonder Labour wants to nationalise it. It sounds tempting to put rail “back in public hands”. Anything would surely be better than what we have.

But would it? Anyone old enough can recall how abysmal British Rail was before privatisation in the 1990s. And Labour admits it WON’T cut fares.
Meanwhile one major contributor to the chaos is the ceaseless greed of the militant unions. They’re champing at the bit for re-nationalisation . . . far easier then to cripple the entire network.
As for Labour claiming this won’t cost a penny, what rubbish. They won’t set up “Great British Railways” for nothing.
What they WILL do, as with nationalised industries of the past, is strip it of vital funding whenever money is tight.
Our railways must be fixed. But nationalising them is a doomed Labour ideological itch YOU will pay to scratch.

WHAT a brainless and hypocritical dolt President Macron so often proves to be.
Imagine waving off thousands of illegal migrants from your shores, then piously moralising about how Britain — now overwhelmed by their number — tries to handle them.
The French fool could solve this lethal crisis at a stroke by taking every single one back via return trip. But he won’t.
And his cops are too idle or fecklessly incompetent to stop them setting sail.
