Brits want Government to get to grips with legal and illegal immigration – here’s how I would do it

THE British people want the Government to get to grips with immigration, legal and illegal.

Not only must illegal immigration be stopped, legal migration must also be brought down.

Parliament must own the problem and set annual limits to cap legal migration and asylum claims.

I will be bringing the Annual Vote on Immigration and Asylum Numbers Bill before Parliament.

It should be at the heart of the next Conservative manifesto.
My plan will work like this:

First, the Government will present an annual figure, or a range of figures, to Parliament.

MPs will be able to amend the annual figure, and then vote on it, but it will be illegal to exceed it.

A limit will make us focus on attracting specific talent to the country and also force us to invest in our own people.

This was one of the big reasons for Brexit, and we must deliver it.

Second, we will fix refugee numbers. ALL will come from UN programmes and nobody will arrive here via organised crime.

My plan would see our country ONLY take refugees that come via the UN and from war-torn areas.

It’ll give us the ability to shut down much of our asylum system, which is unfit for purpose.

What sane system gives almost 50 per cent of adult Albanians asylum when they come from a safe country? It’s just crazy.

In some years, we could increase refugee numbers if MPs wanted, to support wonderful Hong Kongers or brave Ukrainians, but only under special circumstances.

If we have to change the Human Rights Act or the ECHR, let’s do it.

The idea that the ECHR or any other laws from Europe underpin our rights is poppycock.

I am part-immigrant myself. Immigrants, especially in the sciences and the health service, have done great things for the UK.

But immigration must be legal and limited. The current numbers are unsustainable. How will we build all the new housing and schools that we need, or mitigate the pressure on GPs?

Labour are out of touch with the British people.

Conservatives are the common sense voice of the British people.

The country wants a fair but robust immigration system.

My new law will deliver that and will make sure that MPs answer to you, the people.
