Are you eligible for Storm Jocelyn payout? Check to see if YOU can claim up to £80 as severe weather grips Britain

As Britain recovers from Storm Isha and prepares to face a battering from Storm Jocelyn, millions of homeowners will be counting the potential cost of the clean up.

Flying debris caused by high winds and water damage from heavy rainfall and flooding can all put a dent in your pocket.

The 90mph gusts brought by the storms have also caused power outages, with thousands of homes in England and Scotland left without electricity.

But those who were affected by power cuts caused by the Atlantic storms could be able to claim compensation under National Grid and Ofgem rules.

Check below to see if you could be eligible for a pay out of up to £80.

When could you be entitled to compensation?

Network companies are responsible for maintaining supply on the grid and fixing power cuts.

If your gas or electricity goes off, you could be entitled to compensation.

The amount you can claim depends on whether the cut was planned, how long it lasted and whether it was your provider’s fault.

What if the power goes off in severe weather?

The level of compensation you can get depends on the category of the stormy weather and how long it took to restore your supply, Ofgem says.

If it happened due to a Category 1 storm – which has wind speeds of between 74 and 95mph – you can get £80 if you power is cut off for 24 hours.

For every six hours over this, you can get an extra £40, with the maximum you can claim being £2,000.

If it happened during a Category 2 storm – which has wind speeds of between 96 and 110mph – you can get £80 if you power is cut off for 48 hours.

For every six hours after this you can get an extra £40, up to a maximum claim of £2,000.

If the power goes out due to issues with the national energy supply, you will not be able to claim compensation as it was not caused by an issue with the network.

What if the power goes off in normal weather?

If the power goes off during normal weather, your local network company has up to 24 hours to restore the supply if the issue affects more than 5,000 homes in one go.

If you’re cut off for 12 hours or more, you can claim £90 for your home or £175 for your business.

You can get an extra £40 for each 12 hour period over this without power, up to £300.

If you’re cut off more than four times in a year for at least three hours every time, you can claim £90 as a domestic or business customer.

How can you claim?

Claims must be made within three months of the power outage if it was unplanned, or within a month if it was planned and you weren’t given notice.

You can make the claim through your local network company.
