Road to Wembley

Liverpool or Norwich will host either Watford or Southampton in the next round of the FA Cup.

I spy a pretty decent route to Wembley for Jurgen Klopp’s side…

There’s still a job to be done today, however.

Time for the draw!

Here we go, then. The delayed fifth-round draw is set to get underway.

HALF TIME

The whistle sounds for the interval. So far, so good for Liverpool.

Curtis Jones made the breakthrough with a simple header at the back post, only for Ben Gibson to net a surprise equaliser from a corner.

The hosts dictated much of the ball, however, and retook the lead after a costly turnover, Darwin Nunez slotting home with aplomb.

Jurgen Klopp will be pleased with that.

Little foray forward for Norwich as half-time approaches.

Kenny McLean hunted the ball down in an advanced position down this near side and moved to the edge of the penalty area.

He then whipped a low cross in, but Alisson fielded with ease.

Liverpool 2-1 Norwich

The tempo has dropped a little again, which suits Liverpool.

Norwich are well set in their off-the-ball shape and making life difficult for the Premier League leaders, however.

For the Reds, it’s a case of probing any weak points again.

Liverpool 2-1 Norwich

How have Liverpool not scored a third? My word!

Cody Gakpo was found by Conor Badley but could only skew wide.

From the resulting goal kick, Norwich were caught napping again with a short ball and Ryan Gravenberch looked to pounce.

With the keeper off his line, Gravenberch’s effort was hacked away from the line by a couple of sliding defenders. Desperate stuff!

goal

GOAL! Liverpool 2-1 Norwich (Nunez, 28)

What was that about Norwich causing their own problems?

The visitors surrendered possession inside their own half and Liverpool were clinical to thread through Darwin Nunez.

The striker made no mistake in picking out the bottom corner.

Three goals in 12 minutes. More, please!

Liverpool 1-1 Norwich

Norwich are determined to play out short from the back.

You have to applaud the tenacity of that, especially with the likes of Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota pressing men and angles.

When they have lost it, though, they’re in all sorts of danger.

goal

GOAL! Liverpool 1-1 Norwich (Gibson, 22)

WOW! The away end has absolutely erupted!

Disregard that last post now!

It was Norwich’s first attempt on target and it was back to basics.

A corner came in and Ben Gibson, stood at the front post, flicked a header back over the head of Alisson. Superb.

It’s just a sea of red pushing forward now.

Norwich have tried to be brave when playing out from the back even after that breakthrough, but their opponents smell blood.

A tough afternoon so far for the Championship underdogs.

goal

GOAL! Liverpool 1-0 Norwich (Jones, 16)

That had certainly been coming!

Liverpool have capitalised on their dominance with a superb opener.

James McConnell, making his first start in red, found Curtis Jones at the back post with a cross and the midfielder made no mistake.

His lovely header was guided back into the far corner.

Liverpool 0-0 Norwich

Almost again for the hosts!

Norwich, for the first time this afternoon, threw bodies forward on the attack, only for a poor cross to spark a costly turnover.

The hosts broke away with pace and Diogo Jota drilled in a low ball for the onrushing Darwin Nunez at the back post.

The striker stretched out a long leg but just couldn’t make contact.

Liverpool 0-0 Norwich

OFF THE POST! So close to brilliance from Darwin Nunez.

The forward picked up the ball on the edge of the area and bent a wonderful effort that looked destined for the far bottom corner.

The goalkeeper was certainly beaten, only for the ball to crack the woodwork and crack back out. Inches away!

Liverpool 0-0 Norwich

OVER! Liverpool have started very brightly indeed. Their latest chance came after Ryan Gravenberch dinked a cross toward the far post.

Diogo Jota met it but, leaning back, could only skew his wild volley over the crossbar and into the stand.

A bit more composure was needed there.

liverpool

Liverpool 0-0 Norwich

Almost a first goal for Joe Gomez! The wait goes on.

The defender picked up the ball in the inside-left channel and let fly after being urged to shoot by the home crowd.

It was a good effort but a deflection took it wide.

liverpool

Liverpool 0-0 Norwich

As expected, Liverpool have started this one on top.

They’re keeping the ball well inside Norwich’s half and probing patiently. The visitors have looked to bait the press so far.

The hosts will have to be clever on the ball to break through.

KICK OFF!

The ball is rolling at Anfield!

Wow. That was an emotional rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone.

Jurgen Klopp couldn’t help but smile a little at that.

Smiles all around

Jurgen Klopp caught up with his good friend David Wagner on the pitch during the warm-ups. Their friendship dates back years.

That will be put to one side when the whistle blows, however.

Klopp also stood in the centre circle and kept a close eye on Norwich’s pre-match preparations. No change there!

It’s a sight the home faithful became very, very used to.

Breaking: FA Cup draw moved

The fifth-round draw will now take place at half-time at Anfield.

That means we can expect the balls to be picked out around 3:15pm.

A slight change of plans, then.

Shock around Anfield

It’s fair to say the bombshell news of Jurgen Klopp’s departure in the summer has surprised every single Liverpool supporter.

That shock is tangible around the ground this afternoon.

However, they will hope to kickstart one of the greatest send-offs in Anfield history this afternoon, with Norwich standing in their way first.

Also – Klopp dogs. No, I have no idea, either.

Klopp’s last dance

This season will mark Jurgen Klopp’s final crack at the FA Cup.

Will this famous competition mark a fairytale end to his tenure?

He has won the trophy once before, of course. His side beat Chelsea in a dramatic penalty shootout at Wembley back in 2022.

It all starts again today and undoubtedly, his side are heavy favourites.

FA Cup drama

Unfortunately, there have been some truly ugly scenes during the game before this one – the Black Country derby at The Hawthorns.

After Matheus Cunha put Wolves two goals to the good, missiles were thrown into and out of the visitors’ section.

Fighting then broke out at the other end of the ground.

There are a large number of police officers currently attempting to restore order, and the game remains suspended.

Because of the TV schedule, we’re going to need a decision soon.

Good afternoon!

Hello, all. Welcome along to Mail Sport’s live coverage of Liverpool’s FA Cup fourth round tie against Norwich.

Except, of course, that isn’t the story today, is it?

Out of nowhere, Jurgen Klopp announced he would depart at the end of the season, citing exhaustion and a desire to return to a normal life.

This promises to be a very emotional spectacle and there is already a subdued atmosphere in and around Anfield.

Will that reflect on the hosts’ performance?

The tributes have already started – more on those shortly.

For now, though, let’s get started with the team news!
