‘I thought I was crazy’, say locals tormented by humming noise that may never be solved – it’s only getting LOUDER

A MYSTERIOUS humming noise is making locals of one town think they’re “crazy”.

Residents of Immingham, North East Lincolnshire, say they have been able to hear the low-level sound inside their homes for a number of years.

But, North East Lincolnshire Council has now searched for its source and “drawn a blank” and say they may never know the truth.

The noise keeps them awake at night with one resident even describing it as a form of “torture”.

Chloe Eccles, who has lived in the town centre for six years, told the BBC she had considered leaving over the racket.

“As the years have gone on I’ve carried on hearing it and I thought I was crazy but other people can hear it too… especially in the last couple of months, it’s got really loud,” she said.

“There’s nothing that blocks it out, it’s constant.”

Rachael Shead, a resident for five years, said the hum affected her and she hoped the source would be identified soon.

She says: “It’s like a droning noise and goes on and on and on… I can hear it over the telly, and the rain and the wind.”

In 2021, hum campaigner Yvonne Conner compared the noise to a form of torture.

She said the council needed to bring in an outside group to measure for the sound as it was “unfair” for residents to have to live through.

The parish of Immingham only has a population of 10,000 people, but it is near an industrial area, wind turbines, and the sea.

There have been suggestions the hum could be coming from oil refineries or underground cables.

A spokesperson for North East Lincolnshire Council confirmed that it had received one complaint about the noise from a resident of Immingham.

“That person has been sent a noise record form to complete over a period of two weeks, which is used to look at the times that people hear a noise. The authority is waiting for that to be returned.

“However, in the meantime the authority is aware that there have been a number of comments on social media about what appears to be an intermittent hum.

“Initial contact with partners operating in the area have so far drawn a blank, although the authority did make the point that it could be coming from outside the borough.

“It will continue to work with residents if more service requests are received. However, a noise must constitute a Statutory Nuisance for formal action to be instigated.”

Immingham isn’t the only UK town to hear a mysterious humming.

A low-frequency droning sound has been keeping residents awake in Earl Shilton, Leicestershire, in 2021.

A resident of a nearby village, says they also heard a similar constant noise for around six months.

Brian Heath, who has lived in Stapleton for 60 years, described that din as a “slow, rolling, rumbling sound”.
