Set in a fictional hospital ward dealing with infectious cases, Breathtaking re-enacted the breakout of the disease.

It was based on the memoir a doctor called Rachel Clarke penned about her experience on the frontline.

Dr Abbey Henderson, who is played by Joanne Froggatt, stars in the show as a junior doctor navigating her way through 2020.

On Wednesday night the show aired its most distressing scenes yet as a doctor broke down in tears.

Joanne’s character could be seen consoling the medic who was left distraught that her patient was going to die.

Viewers later realised the sick man could have been saved if he had surgery, however, he was denied this due to resource issues.

Another heartbreaking scene saw a doctor make a phone call to a concerned relative to reveal her husband had died with Covid-19.

The episode stunned viewers at home who flooded social media with their reactions.

New Covid drama Breathtaking is hitting our screens

“So #BREATHTAKING is a tough watch again. Partner currently crying remembering the nights he stayed up when I was asleep to make sure I was still breathing. We couldn’t go to hospital as my lips weren’t blue. He was so scared I was going to die. To be fair I was a bit worried too,” said a third.

While a fourth commented: “Impossible to watch without crying your eyes out. The shear bravery of all the drs, nurses, ambulance workers, families etc is something else. I can’t imagine the psychological impact on them all.”

Breathtaking’s three episodes are available to stream now on ITVX.
