During that time she had some big storylines including a bigamous marriage to Peter Barlow and an abusive and controlling relationship with Charlie Stubbs.

But despite her prominent role on the show, Sally has revealed she still had to deal with misogyny from one particular director, who went on to side with a male guest star during filming.

She said: “Certain directors, it was usually on Coronation Street actually, and they wouldn’t last very long put it that way, they were discovered quite quickly.

“There was one, he was an absolute dire misogynist and he…I was the lead, obviously I was Shelley, and the lead character in my storyline and there was an actor brought in to play something with my storyline.

“And this actor, who will remain nameless said, ‘She’s in my eyeline’ and just pointed at me. This k*** of an actor.

“I turned round to the director to say ‘can you tell him not to say that, not to treat me like that’ you know? And he went ‘could you just move Sally? I mean I think it’s probably best if you do.’

“So even though it was my bar, as landlady of the Rovers, it was a major part and they still went with the bloke.

“And that’s happened quite a lot with directors, not any more, not for the last 10 years I’d say. I’ve been doing this for 25 years.”

Speaking on the Chatabix podcast, which is hosted by comedians Joe Wilkinson and David Earl, Sally said that despite that experience, she rates the majority of people who have come from a soaps background either in front or behind the camera.

Sally, who now co-writes and stars in the hit Channel 5 series The Madame Blanc Mysteries, said: “I remember especially in Coronation Street, most of them were amazing and I still know them now, fantastic people.

“And the hardest job ever, I’d always get a director who has done a soap, I’d always hire one, I’d hire an actor who has done a soap because they are hard as nails.

“They get in and they’re raw, they know their lines, they’re in and they don’t mess about. There’s something about that training.”
