Rita Moreno Reveals Marlon Brando “Recommended” She Seek Mental Health Care: “Here’s This Crazy Man Telling This Crazy Woman That She Needs Therapy”

Rita Moreno recently opened up about the torrid love affair she shared with Marlon Brando, revealing the late actor was the one who convinced her to seek help after she endured years of bullying.

The veteran actress opened up about her mental health in a recent talk with People en Español.

“It took me a long time, and therapy, to get to like myself,” she said. “When you get traumatized that early in your life, it takes a long time to get rid of the notion that you’re bad.”

She added that Brando was the one who “recommended” that she seek help.

“Here’s this crazy man telling this crazy woman that she needs therapy,” Moreno joked. “I adored him — I was madly in love with him.”

The pair met the set of the 1954 Napoloeon biopic Désirée, sparking an eight-year love affair. They later worked together again in the 1968 drama The Night of the Following Day.

“We had a thing going,” Moreno said. “Oh, yeah, that was the crux of our relationship. It was really, essentially, very sexual, and he was amazing. So was I!”

She admitted that The Godfather star is still “the lust” of her life, while her late husband Leonard Gordon was the love of her life, despite his “controlling” nature.

While praising Gordon’s “fabulous sense of humor” and other positive attributes, Moreno confessed, “This marriage taught me something about relationships that I didn’t like, and that is having to be with somebody forever and ever is not necessarily a fabulous thing.”

She added, “Sometimes it is. But more often than not, it’s not. That’s something I learned — a big, deep lesson.”

Moreno and Gordon share a daughter, Fernanda Luisa Gordon. He later died in 2010 after they were married for 45 years.
