British pensioner, 76, dies on Costa Blanca after falling during ‘domestic incident’ – as her daughter, 38, and man, 73, are arrested for ‘failing to call emergency services’

  • The woman is reported to have fallen three days before she died
  • Police say her companions may not have sought help as they were drinking

Two British nationals have been arrested in Spain following the death of a UK pensioner who is believed to have suffered a fatal fall.

The unnamed female casualty, 76, is reported to have fallen at a property in Rojales near Torrevieja, south of Alicante, several days ago.

A 38-year-old woman, reported to be the septuagenarian’s daughter, and a 73-year-old man thought to be a friend have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.

The pair are accused of failing to call the emergency services after she fell in a domestic accident on the Costa Blanca.

Police sources say she may have fallen three days before she died – but that her companions did not call for help because they were drinking heavily and under the influence of alcohol.

Rojales is located in Spain's south-west, south of the British ex-pat hotspot of Alicante

However, the duo are said to have insisted they raised the alarm in the early hours of Tuesday morning after realising that she was dead.

Investigators are treating the death as manslaughter caused by omission. Radio Alicante reports that municipal police in Guardamar are leading the probe.

It was not immediately clear if the dead woman had also been drinking before she fell and died.

Civil Guard officers in Alicante are expected to make an official comment later this week once the two Brit suspects have appeared in court for a remand hearing.

The man being held is believed to be a friend of the female OAP but it is not known if he lived in the property.

MailOnline has contacted the Foreign Office for comment.
