Eiza González is committed to her craft. On this morning’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the actress revealed that she learned a song entirely in German just “five minutes” before filming Guy Ritchie‘s upcoming movie, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.
González and host Drew Barrymore kicked off their interview with some girl talk, before Barrymore played a clip from the star’s new movie in which she speaks a number of different languages.
“I just need to call out how difficult it is to speak in a different accent — a dialect — and then speak another language. How did you do it?” Barrymore asked, to which González replied, “I was so nervous. The first day on set, I was like, ‘Oh, is he just gonna be like, just make her American?’ I was so terrified by that.”
Despite her reservations, González took on the challenge.
“I pushed for it. I worked really, really hard,” she said. “I have to speak German, I have to speak Italian, I have to speak French. And then he was like, ‘Can you sing? Would you sing?’ And I was like, ‘I think I can sing.’”
In fact, she even sings a song in German in the film.
“I learned it five minutes before filming,” she admitted to Barrymore. “I had to learn it phonetically. It was crazy. I don’t know German at all.”
González previously opened up about the scene in an interview with KVUE. According to the actress, the German song was not originally in the script.
“[Ritchie] really develops personality on films, and I never knew if it was the actors, him, or what it was, and when we got the script … he just started saying like, ‘Oh can you sing, oh amazing, let’s write a scene in this you can sing and let’s do it in German. And do you speak Italian? Do you speak French? Babs amazing let’s showcase you,’” she said. “He just wants to showcase you so that’s why like I couldn’t stop working with him. I’m just so so grateful to Guy.”
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare — a World War II spy action flick — also stars Henry Cavill, Alan Ritchson, Henry Golding, Alex Pettyfer and Hero Fiennes-Tiffin. It comes to theaters on April 24.
