My brother’s laziness is driving me insane

My brother’s laziness is driving me demented.

I’m a man of 45 and he’s 48. Everything was fine until our mum, who we lived with, died.  We live in a council house and my brother has taken over the tenancy since mum passed away two years ago.

I thought we’d be fine but he leaves me to do absolutely everything. I sort all the shopping, cooking and cleaning and my brother doesn’t lift a finger.

We both work full time but he does four days of long shifts, while I work regular nine to five hours.

He says the long shifts completely wipe him out and as I get home earlier, I can sort the shopping and dinner. He hasn’t once cooked for me.

I’ve started to get anxious and feel overwhelmed with all the chores to keep on top of. I’d like to get my own place but I can’t afford it.

DEIDRE SAYS: Ask your brother for a meeting and tell him that running the house is too much for you.

Tell him you’re going to draw up a rota to split the household chores between you. Some supermarkets can arrange free deliveries of groceries to save time.

One of you can order your supplies and one of you has the task of putting the shopping away. Take it in turns to vacuum your home and clean the bathroom and kitchen.

There are free chores planners available to print online if that helps.
