My neighbour noisy hot tub is driving me insane – it’s ruining our garden but everyone says I need to suck it up

A WOMAN has been left infuriated by her neighbour after he decided to purchase a hot tub.

While the hot tub isn’t a problem, she revealed it constantly makes a loud noise and has ruined her families time out in the garden.

Despite being upset by the hot tub, many said she had to suck it up, especially when she had complaints about her own noise.

She explained: “AIBU to be really upset over my neighbour’s new inflatable hot tub? For context, we are a family of four in a family neighbourhood.”

She revealed that as a family they do make noise as the kids have music lessons and play out in the garden but try to keep at a minimum.

“Basically, we’re really sensitive to our neighbour’s noise dislikes as they live alone and have said they don’t like the sound of children,” she added.

But now her neighbour has a hot tub installed right by their fence, she’s left not knowing what to do.

“It’s on all the time, 24/7 with a hum that’s impossible to tune out,” she explained.

“We can also hear it from bathroom, kitchen and two back bedrooms if the windows are open.

“We told neighbour this and at first they were fairly amenable, building a soundproof box to encase the pump.

“But it’s barely made any difference and we’re bathed in the sound as soon as we step outside.”

Although her neighbour attempted to solve the problem, it didn’t work so the mum went over to see if anything else could be done.

But the neighbour had called it quits – claiming it was ‘just like a fridge’ and that the family should get used to it as they’ve had to get used to their children.

Shocked by the comment, she added: “Literally, as in you have laughing, babbling, crying children, I have a hot tub, c’est la vie.

“Which has made me feel really sad because comparing children to a hot tub is just mean?!”

She said she doesn’t want the tub removed – but wants a way to make it less noisy.

How high can a garden fence be?

Despite what many people think a garden fence can be as high as 100m but you need to get planning permission for any fence taller than 2m.

Any fence under 2m does not need planning permission.

However, there are some complications to this.

If you are thinking about front garden fences, restrictions state that fences alongside a driveway can be a maximum of 1m or 3ft.

You would need to get planning permission for putting a trellis on a fence of 2m.

But, if any plant that you grow on that trellis exceeds 2m, you do not need to obtain a permit for the growing plant.

“We are being friendly but honest in sharing how we feel because it’s literally ruining our outside space. It’s much louder than a fridge… more like a substation,” she said.

Taking to Mumsnet, she asked what she should do next but many agreed there was nothing for her to do but suck it up.

One person wrote: “Suck it up. They’ll get bored eventually, or panic when they get their first electricity bill. Either way, I don’t see this as a permanent problem.”

Another commented: “You can’t change it so the quicker you accept it the better really. You will stop noticing it soon – it’s only obvious because it’s new and now you’re stressed about it so all feels exaggerated.

“You’re annoying them with your noise and now they’re annoying you back, unless you live in the middle of nowhere then there’s nothing you can really do,” penned a third.

Meanwhile a fourth said: “They are correct though, the noise of their hot tub is annoying to you, your kids are annoying to them, it’s life when you live close to people.”

“So neighbours have to put up with your sounds but you don’t have to put up with theirs? Yeah, you’re being a d***,” claimed a fifth
