Best Met Gala memes: Ed Sheeran is hilariously compared to Dumb & Dumber character AND Troy Bolton in  blue suit as Rebecca Ferguson’s black dress sparks ‘barber cape’ comments

On Monday evening we were graced with one of the biggest nights in fashion – the highly-anticipated Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Every year on the first Monday of May, a series of A-listers gather in their most extravagant looks for a lavish party hosted by Vogue editor Anna Wintour. 

The theme this year was Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, and the party had a Garden of Time dress code, which saw many celebrities donning dazzling floral ensembles.

Among those taking to the red carpet at the star-studded event were Zendaya, Ariana Grande, Kim Kardashian, Kendall Jenner, Kylie Jenner, Nicole Kidman, Dua Lipa, Lauren Sanchez, and Jennifer Lopez. 

But of course, as to be expected with any big event, the memes have been rolling in as social media reacts to the fashion choices – and from best dressed to worst, no one is safe from the jokes. 

Here, MailOnline rounds up some of the best Met Gala 2024 memes:

To kick things off, Ed Sheeran looked like he had to choose between basketball and singing, as one fan likened his light blue tuxedo to that of High School Musical’s Troy Bolton.

‘Can’t believe Ed Sheeran chose to bring Troy Bolton’s tux from HSM 3 prom scene back to life for the #MetGala,’ she joked.

The tweet has racked up more than 5,000 likes, with other social media users agreeing that the tux reminded them of eighties and nineties prom attire.

Others compared the jazzy blue outfit to that of the iconic frilly piece that Harry Dunne wears in Dumb and Dumber.

‘Ed Sheeran at the #MetGala is giving Harry Dunne from Dumb & Dumber but I love it,’ gushed one X user.

Another quipped: ‘Did someone from 1992 lose their prom date? If so, you can find him at the #MetGala’.

‘Ed Sheeran looks like he’s going to the prom in the 80s. He’s just missing the ruffled tux shirt,’ joked a third.

Meanwhile, Rebecca Ferguson arrived wrapped up in a voluminous black cape, that covered her up to her neck – but then she pulled it off to reveal a dazzling look underneath.

However, before the big reveal, cheeky social media users agreed that it reminds them of something that’s not very high fashion – sitting in the chair at the barbers.

One viewer reposted the photo with the caption: ‘Me when I’m in the barbers’.

Sarah Jessica Parker channeled Carrie Bradshaw as she opted for a nude-colored dress with a vine-like silver pattern throughout and a dramatic headpiece.

But, with Sex and the City having a somewhat revival after dropping onto US Netflix, one fan poked fun at her iconic character, writing: ‘Carrie on her way to go get dumped by Big for the 82nd time’.

Lana Del Ray on the other hand, opted for a tree theme, sporting a bizarre headpiece complete with branches – it prompted some fashionistas to jest that she may have taken the theme too seriously.

One X user wrote: ‘Nobody: Lana Del Ray at the Met Gala:’ alongside some questionable photos of sticks.

Another joked: ‘Lana Del Ray gives a pro tip on how to enjoy your vacation without getting mosquito bites,’ in reference to the large net that covered the top half of her body and face. 

Kim Kardashian opted for a different kind of look, shocking fans with a very small and tight-fitted silver corset.

This led to an influx of memes on social media, with one user writing: ‘Kim when she takes that #MetGala dress off,’ alongside a GIF of Spongebob struggling to breathe.

Others jested: ‘How many ribs did she get removed?’ and ‘Kim trying to walk up the Met Gala steps in that dress’ with a meme of Jennifer Lawrence trying to clamber up some stairs in No Hard Feelings.
