How DO stars get into their outrageous Met Gala gowns? From being sewn into dresses to wearing adult nappies to avoid toilet trips, it’s not all glamour behind the scenes!

How DO stars get into their outrageous Met Gala gowns? From being sewn into dresses to wearing adult nappies to avoid toilet trips, it’s not all glamour behind the scenes!

Every year, fashion fans eagerly await the first Monday in May, the date of the famous Met Gala.

Established in 1948 by publicist Eleanor Lambert, the gala is a fundraiser, supporting the New York City‘s Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.

It is attended by the world’s most famous celebrities, with tickets costing some £23,000, and tables a staggering £210,000.

The event, which is chaired by Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, boasts a different theme every year (for 2024, it was Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion) and celebrities try to outdo each other, donning outlandish statement outfits.

But it isn’t all glitz and glamour, with reports of bizarre celebrity behaviour taking place, including stars donning nappies to avoid having to use the bathroom, having to be sewn into outfits, and even rumours that one celebrity soiled themselves after taking too many diet pills.

Meanwhile, Cardi B (pictured) required help from nine staff due to the enormous skirt she donned for the event

And some stars wear such lavish gowns that they struggle to move in them.

Gigi Hadid was snapped during Monday’s Met Gala being helped by five staff, as she was unable to walk up the stairs unaided.

She told Vogue: ‘It was that slow to walk up because I’m literally wearing a sculpture by Thom Browne and his team.

‘There are 2,008,000 beads just on the dress alone. It took 20 people 5000 hours to work on this look. I’m just so honoured to be presenting this for them.’

Meanwhile, Cardi B wore a dress with such a large skirt, that she needed some nine helpers to arrange the gown as she posed on for photographs.

While it may seem extreme, it is not at all rare for celebrities to wear outfits that are so form-fitting, they need to be sewn into them.

Speaking about her figure-hugging 2022 frock, Dove Cameron revealed what happened when she was sewn into the Iris van Herpen gown.

She told Harper’s Bazaar: ‘This is a funny story that I’ve never told, but they tried to make it to my measurements before it got to New York, but of course they had to alter it.

‘The whole dress was being held together by like the finest mesh in the world, like we’re talking spider-web thin. All of these pieces are metal-backed, they have fabric on top, which is what makes the arm pieces stand out and what makes everything hold in place, but literally one snag and the dress would be ruined.

‘When they went to take the dress off, they had pinned through my skin. Didn’t hurt, I literally felt nothing, there was no blood, nothing. But they were like, what is it caught on? It was my f****** skin.’

Attending the Met Gala in 2022, Kourtney Kardashian was another star who was sewn into her Thom Browne outfit.

Writing on her Poosh website, Kourtney said: ‘I had to stand up the few blocks to the gala, as my skirt was being sewn on me during the whole ride.

‘The Thom Browne team had to finish sewing up a few details on my skirt, and they literally sewed until the moment I had to step out onto the carpet.’

Meanwhile, other stars have suggested they are willing to take even more extreme measures in the name of fashion.

Both Katy Perry and Kim Kardashian have admitted that they would wear nappies if their outfit made using the bathroom difficult.

Speaking ahead of the 2016 Met Gala, Katy Perry told reporters: ‘I’m wearing a really large thing tomorrow, which will be very difficult to use the restroom in.

‘I might just wear a diaper. I don’t really care. I am just going to be looking around for people to help me to the restroom.’

Speaking to Ellen Degeneres in 2022, Kim Kardashian also admitted that she would ‘literally wear anything’ – even an adult nappy – if the outfit called for it.

She said: ‘I don’t care how uncomfortable, I don’t care how long, if I have to wear a diaper and not go to the bathroom – I don’t care what I have to do.’

Kim also revealed that she already had a box of them, after buying them due to a misunderstanding regarding the bar exam she took.

She explained: ‘I actually bought adult diapers when I took the bar exam because I didn’t know how it worked so I thought I had to sit there for eight hours straight.’

And according to the Sun, one unnamed actor actually donned one of the nappies, even telling other attendees that he had to because he couldn’t use the bathroom in his intricate outfit.

More unexpected Met Gala behaviour was reported by the Sun, which claimed that an unnamed ‘globally renowned’ star had an awful night during one year’s gala – due to taking too many weight loss pills.

According to the outlet: ‘While walking the red carpet they had an accident in their underwear. It was actually heartbreaking because he was very humble.

‘Stylists came to his aid and got him a replacement pair of trousers and underpants.

‘He was very grateful and has maintained a deep respect for the team at Conde Nast, the host, as a result.’
