The hack was shared on Reddit’s lawn care forum after a user asked for advice on improving their lawn’s appearance.

Sharing a photo, they complained that despite regular mowing and applying fertilizer their lawn has a “lime green color” and random dark patches.

A Redditor writing under the handle Justabuck shared their solution for the problem.

“Top dress with compost gave me a deeper green than any fert ever did,” they said. “A lot of work, but so worth it.”

Another response to the thread agreed and revealed it’s used by professional gardeners.

“I used to work at a very, very high-end golf course that did this to all the grass surrounding the bunkers,” they said.

“It was AMAZING what it did to them, the grass was so dark it was crazy.

“But yeah it is pretty costly and time-consuming.

“I would aerate and do a light topdressing of compost.”

Aeration involves making small holes in the soil to allow beneficial nutrients and water to reach the roots.

Many Redditors up-voted the advice and were eager to try it for themselves.

The hack comes after the founder of Brandon Rushing Lawn and Garden Care in Northern Virginia shared tips for a putter-worthy lawn.

“It’s the ultimate goal of many homeowners to have a neighbor walk by their lawn and shout, in consummate dad-joke fashion, ‘Fore!'” he said.

Brandon Rushing revealed mower blades should be set at 3.5 to 4.5 inches to avoid cutting too low.

He said incorrect trimming can cause discoloration and increase weed infestation.

He added that weeds can “rob your lawn” of beneficial nutrients and encourage pests.
