More than half of students are addicted to vaping, shocking study finds

MORE than half of students are addicted to vaping, a study found.

Nearly 75 per cent are hooked at one university.

Student news site The Tab spoke to 6,000 undergraduates and found 57 per cent were addicted to disposable vapes, up from 27 per cent the year before.

Worryingly, 52 per cent said they did not smoke before picking up the habit.

And 34 per cent said they get through a disposable vape as quickly as one day or night out.

As a result, 16 per cent reported have health complications since vaping.

The most common include gum disease, ulcers, shortness of breath and coughing.

Lost Mary was the most popular brand.

The most vapers are at Northumbria University (74 per cent), followed by Oxford Brookes (68), Cardiff (67), King’s College London and Newcastle (both 64).

The least go to University of Sussex (35 per cent).

Expert Dr Babak Ashrafi said: ‘‘Certain electronic vapes can deliver nicotine to the bloodstream more rapidly than cigarettes, making them more addictive.

“If struggling, talking to your GP or an addiction specialist is a good first step. They can offer personalised plans and medication.”
