Shocking moment a car plows into Austin ER killing the driver and leaving five people injured as patients are rushed to other hospitals in Texas city

A car crashed into a Texas hospital’s emergency room on Tuesday, killing the driver and injuring at least five others, including two children, authorities said.

The car smashed into the ER at St. David’s North Austin Medical Center shortly after 5:30 pm, Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services said in a Facebook post.

At least one person is dead, Austin police detective Carey Chaudoir told the Austin American-Statesman. Officials later confirmed it was the driver of the vehicle.

Officials said a child was hospitalized with ‘potentially serious injuries’ while an adult and another child suffered non-life threatening injuries.

A second adult was hospitalized with ‘potentially serious injuries.’ 

The car smashed into the ER at St. David¿s North Austin Medical Center shortly after 5:30pm, Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services said

St. David´s North Austin Medical Center, which has a 24-hour emergency department, is described on its website as a 441-bed acute care facility that handles maternity and newborn care, other women´s health services and many other specialties, including heart and brain surgeries and robotic surgery

CPR was given to the person in the vehicle after they were removed. 

The crash appeared to be unintentional, authorities said, but vehicular homicide units are at the scene investigating the cause of the accident.

Video of the incident showed several waiting room chairs in the ER destroyed before the car was pinned inside a hallway near a reception desk.

The ER was mostly clear of people when the crash happened, though staff were seen trying to get one person clear of the wreck. 

You can hear car tires screeching and its tail lights are visible as the room becomes full of white smoke, with the car’s accelerator seemingly still being pressed down.  

At least eight emergency room patients at the hospital are being taken elsewhere to help the staff’s work load. 

The ER can handle walk-ins, but is closed to ambulances until further notice. 

Texas Governor Greg Abbott posted a statement to X about the tragedy Tuesday night.
