This is the shocking moment hundreds of reckless festival goers shone powerful laser beams at a passenger jet overhead.

Video footage from the fireworks event in Tultepec, Mexico, shows a huge crowd of party-goers at the event as the aircraft flies above.

Within moments countless laser pointers are beaming into the sky lighting up the entire plane in an eerie green glow.

The footage, which was captured last weekend on March 16 and 17, astonished social media users who slammed the festival-goers for their stupidity.

One said: ‘I can’t believe the tremendous lack of grey matter of these people. It’s incredible how stupid they are.’

Another added: ‘It’s not funny and it’s illegal.

A third pointed the finger to those who had travelled to the area instead of the locals.

‘The people of Tultepec do not do this,’ they said.

‘Planes pass over the area every day and this does not happen.

‘Many people go to the fair from other places and cause disturbances.’

It is currently unclear if the police are investigating the video or if the airline targeted has complained to air safety officials.

The annual International Pyrotechnics Festival is a celebration of the area’s role as the centre of Mexico’s home-grown fireworks industry.

Up to 100,000 festival goers watch and take part in spectacular processions using huge displays of fireworks.

The use of laser pointers against aircraft is banned in most countries in the world and can lead to jail sentences and hefty fines.

It comes after a 22-year-old pilot revealed why you should never point a laser at an aircraft – claiming that the FBI will track you down ‘immediately.’

Sabrina Johnson, an airline and helicopter pilot who has been flying since she was 14, detailed the dangers and consequences of pointing a laser at an aircraft – including the number of years you could spend in jail for the felony.

In a viral clip, which has amassed over 1.1 million views on TikTok, Sabrina said: ‘If you think it’s funny to shoot a laser at an airplane, it’s not’.

She revealed that she had been lasered ‘maybe two or three times,’ and that the FBI had even called her to let her know they had tracked them down immediately each time.

‘When I was flying as a flight instructor, I was flying through New York City, doing some sightseeing, and I was getting lasered.

‘So, it’s basically like a green laser that flashes, they try to blind pilots,’ she explained.

She added that people often think it’s ‘funny,’ however, it can have some serious consequences.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, laser strikes on an aircraft are a serious threat to pilots.

Shining a laser at a pilot can result in a up to £8,700 fine, notes the FAA.
