The style evolution of Eddie Redmayne and his wife Hannah Bagshawe: From tailored suits to pushing fashion boundaries as they wear matching Met Gala dresses

The style evolution of Eddie Redmayne and his wife Hannah Bagshawe: From tailored suits to pushing fashion boundaries as they wear matching Met Gala dresses

Eddie Redmayne, 42, and his wife, Hannah Bagshawe, 41, stood out from the crowd at the 2024 Met Gala on Monday as they pushed the boundaries on the red carpet.

The Fantastic Beasts actor took to the red carpet in a black blazer dress with a white net skirt, featuring sheer cut out panels and a wavy ink blot pattern – an androgynous look that matched Hannah’s strapless gown with the same pattern.

Since partnering with stylist Harry Lambert, Eddie has entered a new era, and has caught the eye of Anna Wintour and made the exclusive guestlist to the biggest night in fashion.

Despite garnering attention for their high-end sense of style, the couple have not always been so adventurous – at the beginning of their relationship they often stuck to the likes of humble suits, crew neck knits, and simple dresses.

Here, MailOnline looks at the evolution of the couple’s fashion journey, as they ditched the basics and became best dressed….

Speaking of Eddie’s style evolution, his stylist Harry, who boasts clients such as Harry Styles and Emma Corrin told Vogue last year after working with him for six months: ‘I’ve always admired Eddie’s fashion sense, and his sense of flair and fun… on the red carpet. When he asked to collaborate, I was super excited to start working with him.’

Eddie hadn’t worked with a stylist before but had seen Harry’s work with other stars and decided to switch up his style.

Harry said: ‘He wanted to evolve his fashion, take some risks, and have fun,” says Lambert. “To try some things that he hadn’t tried before.’

The once tailored suits were switched up, with the duo deciding to subvert menswear classic to create a more modern twist.

Eddie’s wife Hannah has seemingly had a fashion glow-up to complement her husband’s new reputation as a fashion guru.

Eddie and Hannah, who is a financial PR, met in 2000 at a charity fashion show while attending Eton College. They soon struck up a friendship and later started dating in January 2012.

Hannah and Eddie were friends for 12 years before things turned romantic in 2012 and the actor invited her on a holiday to Florence during a filming break from Les Miserables.

They are now married and are the proud parents of eight-year-old daughter Iris, eight, and six-year old son Luke.

In 2015, the star told the Daily Mail: ‘I saw Hannah across the room at a party and she was very beautiful and very funny and she loves the arts and theatre just as I do, so we became friends.

‘I’d finished rehearsals and was about to start shooting in a few days and so I said to myself, “I’m going to go to Florence for a quick break and write or do something like that.”

‘Before I went, Hannah and I were on a sort of date — we’d been good friends for 12 years — and we had a wonderful evening and I suddenly said, “You don’t want to come to Florence with me next week, do you?” She said, “That’s absurd, you don’t mean it.” I said, “Yes I do!” So our first proper date was in Florence.’

As their romance blossomed, they made their first few appearances together at various events that same year.

Pictured at the 10th anniversary performance of King Lear at the Almeida Theatre, London, Eddie sported a simple trouser and blazer combo, with a light blue crew neck sweatshirt underneath.

Meanwhile, Hannah opted for a modest black dress with a red stripe, complete with a red blazer and tights – a far cry from the couple’s outlandish fashion statements of today.

In the same year, the pair attended the BAFTA's and Hannah stepped up her style, showing off a glamorous embelleshed dress, next to her husband in his suave velvet suit

Fast forward to 2016, aged 34, the A-list actor received an OBE at Windsor castle and wore a tailored tailcoat, while Hannah kept in simple in a black dress and fascinator

Meanwhile, the Theory of Everything star again went for a simple tuxedo, but this time switching out a black bow tie for the white.

At the film’s premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, Eddie stepped out of his comfort zone and into a garishly bright turquoise suit, with his lover donning a short and formal-looking navy dress.

In 2015, things took a turn and Eddie began to properly explore the world of fashion – the British actor was even named GQ magazine’s best dressed man thanks to his sharp suits and daring style choices – the same year he and Hannah tied the knot at the Babington House.

The pair also attended the BAFTA’s in 2015 and Hannah stepped up her style, showing off a glamorous embellished dress, next to her husband in his suave velvet suit.

However, the couple's real high-end fashion journey began in more recent years, as Eddie ditched the tailored suits for the likes of more experimental and playful choices (Pictured at the Met Gala in 2023)

He looked dapper in a black tailcoat, pale grey waistcoat and grey pinstripe trousers and complemented the stylish three-piece suit with a cream pocket handkerchief and a pale blue tie.

And as Eddie’s fashion sense evolved, so did his partners – the star linked arms with Hannah, who wore a classy knee-length black dress and heels.

The publicist’s elaborate fascinator caught the eye, and from underneath her long tresses fell over her shoulders.

From the black Alexander McQueen jumpsuit he wore to last year’s BAFTA’s, to a sparkling sheer turtleneck he sported at the 2022 GQ Men of the Year Awards, his sense of style has dramatically shifted.

At the Met Gala last year, the loved-up couple wowed as the actor looked effortlessly cool in his double breasted blazer which was adorned with pearl brooches with draping chains and flare trousers.

Meanwhile, Hannah looked glamorous in a pearl dress with a satin ruffle gown, an homage to Karl Lagerfeld, which was the theme of last year’s event.

He commanded attention in quirky white shirt with huge sculpted collar – a piece that wouldn’t have been looked at by the fashion icon in his early career days.

Now, in one of his most daring looks yet, he stole the spotlight at the Met Gala by flashing a cheeky glimpse of his legs in an androgynous piece that got people talking.

Hannah’s dress boasted a wide pleated net skirt, while she added sheer evening gloves and a matching black fascinator.

She gave her petite frame a few extra inches of height in black velvet high heels as she held hands with Eddie.

The actor has become a fashion icon, making his way into various best-dressed lists.

He and Hannah’s custom matching Met Gala looks were designed by Steve O Smith, a London-based designer.

Eddie told Vogue: ‘I love line drawings, and particularly charcoal… those great artists who could create something extraordinary with so little – Matisse, Cy Twombly or the romance of Seurat charcoal drawings.  Steve’s clothes merge fashion and art so uniquely and I adore that.’
