I had a garter fail at my wedding – but people say the whole idea is ‘embarrassing’ and ‘cringey’

A WEDDING ritual that went hopelessly wrong, has gone viral with over three million likes.

The unfortunate bride has taken it in her stride, but she has attracted a lot of flack in the process.

It started off so well with Edmerando (@edmerando) looking the quintessence of a perfect bride.

In the post, she wore a classic strapless wedding gown, and her sunkissed, touselled hair tumbled over her shoulders.

Friends and family gathered around her, as she sat on a chair waiting for a traditional wedding ritual to begin – the removal of the bride’s garter.

This usually happens after the wedding reception and so it was at Edmerando’s nuptials.

It involved the groom removing the garter from underneath the bride’s gown (with his hands or teeth) and tossing it into the crowd.

Whoever catches it is said to be married next.

At many weddings, it is an eagerly anticipated part of the wedding day proceedings.

But at this wedding, it was a bit of an epic fail.

The poor bride had forgotten to put it on and, when the groom was posed, his head under her skirts, she remembered she wasn’t wearing it.

While the audience thought it hilarious, she looked appalled.

Her video was captioned: “When you forget the garter.”

So famous has her video become in the TikTok community, that this plucky woman now uses it to describe herself on her platform: “The girl who forgot her garter,” she said.

Comments to her post, however, were divided about the ritual, and many considered it tasteless.

“Am I the only one to think this is embarrassing?” said one viewer. “Like I would never let this happen in front of my family.”

It was a similar view shared by this follower: “I always thought this whole thing was cringey.”

There was horror from a wedding organizer: “As a coordinator, I don’t even start the garter toss without making sure it’s on the bride. Biggest fear ever.”
